Contributory Parent Visa

Applications for this visa undergo a two-stage assessment:

1. Eligibility is checked, and the application is either queued or refused.
2. The application is further assessed when a spot becomes available, and a decision is made.

Do not arrange to stay permanently in Australia until your visa is granted. A notification will be provided in writing upon approval.

You cannot apply for this visa if you have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (subclass 870) visa.

This visa includes the following criteria:

1. Retirees can apply for a Parent visa (subclass 143) if they held or previously had an Investor Retirement (subclass 405) or Retirement (subclass 410) visa on 8 May 2018, and they have not held any other substantive visa between that date and the Parent visa application. Applying as a retiree exempts you from the following:
   • balance-of-family test
   • assurance of support
   • the need for a sponsor
2. You need sponsorship from an eligible sponsor, typically an eligible child. If your child is under 18, alternative sponsorship by a relative or community organisation is possible. Approval is required for the sponsorship. If you apply for this visa as a retiree, you don't need a sponsor.
3. You and your family members applying with you must meet the health requirements. Other non-migrating family members may also need to meet this requirement.
4. You and other family members applying with you must meet the character requirement. Other non-migrating family members may also need to meet this requirement.
5. Sign the Australian values statement if you are 18 years of age or older, confirming your commitment to respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.
6. You must meet the balance-of-family test. You satisfy the balance-of-family test if:
   • At least half of your children and stepchildren are eligible children.
   • More eligible children are living in Australia than in any other single country. If you apply for this visa as a retiree, you don't need to meet the balance-of-family test.
7. To be eligible, you must secure an assurance of support, ensuring that you and your accompanying family members won't need government assistance upon entering Australia with this visa. If you apply for the visa as a retiree, you do not need an assurance of support.
8. You and your family must have paid back any money owed to the Australian Government or have a formal arrangement in place to repay it.
9. Your immigration history is considered, and you may be ineligible if you had a visa cancelled or a previous application refused.
10. If you apply for this visa as a retiree, you must maintain adequate health insurance until you are granted a Parent visa. Your insurance should cover you for medically necessary treatment, including transport.
11. The visa will only be granted if it is in the best interests of an applicant under 18.
12. If eligible, you can apply for Australian citizenship.

You can apply for the subclass 143 visa as a two-step process by first applying for a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa. Applying for the subclass 173 visa and then the subclass 143 visa allows you to spread the cost of the visas over several years.

Holding a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa means you have already met the balance-of-family test.

If you apply for the subclass 143 visa as a retiree you don't have to:

1. meet the balance of family test, or
2. have a sponsor or an assurance of support.

When applying for this visa, you have the option to include other members of your family. It's essential to provide details for all family members, regardless of whether they intend to migrate or not. Even if your partner is not applying for the visa with you, their information must be included in the application.

Family members who apply for the visa must meet specific health and character requirements. Additionally, those family members who do not plan to come to Australia may still be subject to health and character requirements.

If you apply for this visa as a retiree:

1. You can include your partner when you apply provided they are also a retiree.
2. You can't include your children in your application.
