Eligibility Criteria

This visa includes the following criteria:

  1. All applicants must be in Australia and hold an eligible visa at the time a subclass 887 visa application is made unless COVID-19 concessions apply. An eligible visa is a:
    1. subclass 489, 495, 496, 475 or 487 visa,
    2. Bridging visa A or Bridging visa B, after having made a valid application for a subclass 489, 495 or 487 visa, or where a subclass 887 visa is lodged outside Australia during the concession period, in which a visa mentioned above expires during the concession period while the holder is outside Australia.
  2. At the time you apply for this visa you must have lived for a total of at least 2 years (unless COVID-19 concessions apply), as the holder of one or more eligible visas, in:
    1. a regional or low-population growth metropolitan area if a state or territory government nominated you for your eligible visa.
    2. a designated area of Australia if a family member sponsored you for your eligible visa.
  3. When you apply for this visa you must have worked full-time for at least 12 months (unless COVID-19 concessions apply), as the holder of one or more eligible visas:
    1. in a regional or low-population growth metropolitan area, if a state or territory government nominated you for your eligible visa.
    2. a designated area of Australia if a family member had sponsored you for your eligible visa.
  4. You, and any family members holding an eligible visa, must have complied with the conditions attached to your eligible visa when in Australia.
  5. When the decision is made on your application you must have functional English, or pay the second instalment of the visa application charge when asked.
  6. You and your family members applying with you must meet the health requirement. As you would have already undertaken a health examination for your eligible visa, in most circumstances you will not need to undertake another one.
  7. You and any members of your family aged 16 years of age or over who apply for this visa with you must meet certain character requirements. Other family members might also need to meet certain character requirements.
  8. Sign the Australian values statement if you are 18 years of age or older, confirming your commitment to respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.
  9. You and your family must have paid back any money owed to the Australian Government or have a formal arrangement in place to repay it.
  10. Your immigration history is considered, and you may be ineligible if you have had a visa cancelled or a previous application refused.

Inclusion of Other Family Members

When applying for this visa, you have the option to include members of your family unit if they currently hold an eligible visa. You must include each family member who is eligible to apply for this visa at the time you lodge your application.  You can't add family members after you have submitted your application.

Family members who apply for the visa must meet specific health and character requirements. Additionally, those family members who do not plan to come to Australia may still be subject to health and character requirements.

Note: Family members who already hold an eligible visa granted based on being part of your family unit may still be included, even if they no longer strictly meet the current definition. For example, a child who has turned 23 years of age since their eligible visa was granted can still be considered under this provision.

Newborn Children

If you have a child born in Australia since your current visa was granted, you must provide details about your child before submitting this application. Learn what to do if your child is born after the current visa is granted. If your child's current visa is not linked to their passport, you cannot lodge their application online.
