Carer Visa (Subclass 836)

This visa allows you to stay in Australia to assist someone with a long-term medical condition.

This permanent visa lets you stay in Australia to care for someone with a long-term medical condition who has no reasonable access to care options in Australia.

This visa grants you the following privileges:

  1. It allows you to stay in Australia indefinitely.
  2. You can work and study in Australia.
  3. Enrolling in Australia’s public healthcare scheme, Medicare, is an option with this visa.
  4. You can sponsor your relatives to come to Australia.
  5. Travel to and from Australia for 5 years.
  6. If eligible, you can apply for Australian citizenship.

This visa lets you stay in Australia to provide care to someone with a long-term medical condition who does not have reasonable access to care options in Australia. The person you care for must be your Australian relative who needs care or your relative’s family member who lives with them and needs care.

Eligibility Criteria

You can apply for this visa if you meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a carer, willing and able to provide ongoing substantial care to your Australian relative or their family member with medical needs.
  2. Have a sponsor, and the sponsorship must be approved.
  3. Hold or have held any substantive visa, excluding a Transit visa (subclass 771), or have made a valid application for a subclass 836 visa within a specified time.
  4. Meet the health requirement, along with any family members applying for the visa.
  5. Meet the character requirement, including family members aged 16 years and over who are applying for the visa.
  6. Have paid back any debts owed to the Australian Government or have a formal arrangement in place.
  7. Not have had a visa cancelled or a previous application refused.
  8. Sign the Australian values statement if you are 18 years of age or older, confirming your commitment to respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.
  9. Consider the best interests of any applicant under 18, as the visa might only be granted if it is in their best interests.
